MY FAIR LADY by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe

American Southwest Theatre Company at New Mexico State University | Las Cruces, NM

directed by Larissa Lury

When Eliza Doolittle, a flower-seller on the streets of London, overhears phoneticist Henry Higgins joke that he could- by changing the way she speaks- turn her from a "guttersnipe" into a lady, she takes him up on the offer and approaches him for speech lessons. What ensues is a bet between Higgins and linguist Colonel Pickering, with Eliza as its pawn. Set in 1912, with the hum of the women's suffrage movement in England echoing throughout, the story begins as question of social mobility, but as Eliza begins to move in Higgins' world, she faces timely questions about what she is and isn't willing to sacrifice. In 2019, we interpret a classic and beloved 1956 musical, which was an interpretation of Shaw's 1913 play Pygmalion, which was in turn an interpretation of an ancient myth. The gorgeous music still charms us, the characters still move us, and the cultural puzzle it weaves continues to engage us.
